INDEPENDENCE, MO (Jan. 31) – Wichita battled back from a three-goal deficit, but came up short on Saturday night in Independence, losing to Kansas City, 5-3, at Cable Dahmer Arena.
Ryan Finnegan, Declan Smith and Michal Stinil led the way for the Thunder. Roddy Ross suffered the loss, making 24 saves.
Jack Randl opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game. He made a great move around a defender in the high slot and beat Ross with a wrist shot for his 16th of the year.
Stinil tied it at 18:13 with a breakaway goal, beating Logan Terness through the five hole for his eighth of the season.
Lucas Sowder potted a power play marker at 19:08 and helped re-gain the lead for the Mavericks. He jumped on a rebound near the blue paint and shoveled it home.
Kansas City scored another early goal just 37 seconds into the second from Jackson Jutting. Justin Janicke created a turnover near the benches. He found Jutting, who hammered a one-timer past Ross.
Three minutes later, Jake McLaughlin walked down the left wing after a face off win and beat Ross with a backhand to make it 4-1.
Smith got one back for the Thunder at 11:47. Nick Nardecchia drove up the ice and fired a shot from the right circle. Terness left a juicy rebound in the crease and Smith pounced on it for his fifth of the campaign to make it 4-2.
In the third, Finnegan cut the lead to one with a one-timer from the slot for his seventh of the season.
Wichita peppered Terness down the stretch. The Thunder had a late power play after Peter Bates was hooked by McLaughlin. Terness made several key saves, including two on Ryan Olsen from near the crease.
McLaughlin found an empty net at 19:16 to end the comeback attempt for Wichita.
With the loss, the Thunder's point streak ends at four. Kyle Crnkovic led the way with six shots for the visitors. Finnegan has goals in three of his last five outings. Stinil scored for the first time since January 10.
