WICHITA, Kan. (Jan. 21) – The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, AHL's San Jose Barracuda and powered by Toyota, announced today three separate transactions
The Barracuda have recalled forward Kyle Crnkovic and defenseman John Gormley. The Thunder have signed veteran forward Ryan Olsen to a standard player contract.
Crnkovic, 23, has dominated since the start of December, registering 23 points (14g, 9a) in 17 games. He's tied for third in the league in points and second in goals over that span. His surge earned him a spot in the Warrior/ECHL All-Star Classic this past Monday.
The Chestermere, Alberta native is on pace for a third straight 50-point season. Crnkovic also leads the Thunder in goals (17) and points (36).
Gormley, 25, returns to San Jose after starting the year with the Barracuda, appearing in four games. Since coming to the Air Capitol at the end of November, the Bronx, New York native has played in 19 contests and recorded four points (2g, 3a), including his first pro goal on December 13 against Idaho.
Prior to turning pro, Gormley played four years with Long Island University, registering 15 points. In his senior season, he was named the second captain in team history and lead the NCAA in hits (133).
Olsen, 31, joins the Thunder after starting the season with Hannover in Germany’s Oberliga. The Delta, British Columbia native began his career in North America, racking up 324 games in the AHL (42g, 41a) and 85 contests in the ECHL (36g, 31a) with Tulsa, Utah, Colorado, and Kansas City. Olsen won a Kelly Cup with the Colorado Eagles in 2017-18, knocking off Wichita in the first round in six games.
The veteran forward has played the majority of the last five seasons overseas. He piled up 125 points (62g, 63a) in 125 career games with EC Kassel (DEL2), and Lowen Frankfurt (DEL). In 2022-23, he was the Most Penalized Player in the DEL.
Olsen's career spans 12 seasons after being drafted in 2012 by the Winnipeg Jets (round 6, #160 overall).
Prior to his professional escapades, Olsen played five seasons in the Western Hockey League, accumulating 166 points (84g, 82a) with Saskatoon and Kelowna.
Wichita remains at home to continue its six-game homestand this weekend with a pair of games against longtime rival, Tulsa. The first meeting of the series is Saturday, January 24. Opening faceoff is set for 6:05 p.m.
