Thunder Signs UMass-Amherst Captain Iacobellis

Wichita, KS (Sept. 18th) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced today the signing of forward Steven Iacobellis (YAHK-ah-bell-iss).

"It's definitely an exciting time as I get to start my pro career and I couldn't be happier coming to Wichita to do that," commented Iacobellis. "I've spoken to Coach Cameron a number of times now and I can already tell he's the type of coach that will get the best out of his players which excites me a lot. I'm also thrilled that I get the chance to play alongside some former junior teammates of mine Joel Rumpel and Mark MacMillan."

Iacobellis, 24, turns pro after playing the last four seasons at UMass-Amherst (NCAA). A native of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound forward served as the team's captain during his junior and senior campaigns. He finished with 87 points (31g, 56a) in 139 career games for the Minutemen, tallying 20 or more points four straight years. He led the team with 21 points (8g, 13a) during his senior year and earned an invite to Vancouver Canucks development camp this past July.

"Steven is a nice blend of speed, skill and will be looked upon to help provide offense," stated Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. "He is a leader as evidenced by him being named captain two seasons in a row. We're excited to have him. He will be attending AHL camp in Bakersfield."
