Independence, MO (Oct. 28th) - Shane Starrett stood on his head on Saturday night, stopping 40 of 41 and helped Wichita to a 4-1 victory over Kansas City at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The win pushes the Thunder record to 6-0-0-0 to start the season.
With the win, Head Coach Malcolm Cameron moves into fifth place all-time in ECHL history with 344 victories.
Mark MacMillan scored twice and Istvan Sofron added a pair of assists. Zach O'Brien and Jeremy Beaury also potted goals for the Thunder.
Both teams found the back of the net in the first. Darren Nowick scored at 12:30 during a two-on-one break. He held onto the puck, waited for the defenseman to lay down and put it past Starrett for a 1-0 lead. O'Brien tied the game with 36 seconds left in the frame as he beat Tyler Parsons with a backhand near the crease.
Beaudry gave Wichita its first lead of the game at 3:56. Louick Marcotte threw a no-look backhand pass across the slot to Beaudry and he blasted it past Parsons. The story of the second was Starrett. He stopped two breakaways and made several tough saves from in-close.
MacMillan jumped a loose puck just 48 seconds into the third and gave the Thunder a 3-1 lead. Marc-Olivier Crevier-Morin took a shot that bounced off the end wall back to the left side of Parsons and MacMillan fired it in for his third of the year. MacMillan added his second at 6:10 from a sharp angle and made it 4-1. Wichita outshot the Mavericks 16-7 in the third and skated away with their sixth-straight win to start the season.
Kyle Platzer netted a pair of assists and extended his point-streak to six games. Sofron netted his first two points in a Thunder uniform. Starrett improved to 3-0-0-0 on the season and was named as the first star. Parsons took the loss, stopping 23 of 27 shots he faced.
Wichita went 0-for-1 on the power play. Kansas City was 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Thunder plays two of the next three at home starting on Friday night against the Allen Americans.
