WICHITA, Kan. (Feb. 6) – Brett Davis scored a power play goal with 53 seconds left in the third period to help lift Rapid City past Wichita, 3-2, on Friday night at INTRUST Bank Arena.
Jay Dickman and Spencer Blackwell provided the offense. Roddy Ross suffered the loss, stopping 40 shots.
After a scoreless first period, Dickman put the Thunder ahead in the second. Kyle Crnkovic fired a shot from the high slot. Dickman was parked at the top of the crease and redirected it through Connor Murphy.
Less than a minute later, Jake Ratzlaff tied the contest at one. He blocked a shot from Noah Beck near the right circle and charged the other way. Ratzlaff fought off Nico Somerville near the red line, came in on a two-on-one and beat Ross for his second of the year.
The Rush grabbed their first lead of the night at 2:53. Xavier Bernard came out of the penalty box, caught a long pass from Davis on the left wall and beat Ross with a slap shot for is third of the year.
Wichita tied it less than a minute later as Blackwell connected for his ninth of the campaign. He stepped into the slot, found a loose puck and beat Murphy to make it 2-2.
Crnkovic was whistled for tripping at 18:14 and Rapid City capitalized. Davis was johnny on the spot after a shot hit a Thunder skate near the high slot and he found a wide open net to make it 3-2.
The Thunder lifted Ross with 30 seconds remaining and had one last chance as the buzzer sounded. Michal Stinil was in the slot and his shot was deflected wide as the clock hit zeroes.
Wichita extended its streak of 30 shots or more to 14-straight games. Blackwell has three goals in his last two games. Dickman has goals in back-to-back outings. Declan Smith and Nick Nardecchia have assists in their last two contests.
The Thunder went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Rush was 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
Wichita remains at home tomorrow night to host Rapid City with the opening faceoff set for 6:05 p.m.
