WICHITA, Kan. (April 19) – Wichita opened its first round series against Tahoe on Saturday night, losing 6-1 at INTRUST Bank Arena.
The Knight Monsters scored five goals in the second period and four on the power play to take Game 1 of the best-of-seven opening round series.
Bear Hughes opened the scoring just 4:25 into the first. Joe Carroll was called for charging at 4:14, which gave Tahoe its first chance on the man advantage. Hughes redirected a pass from Simon Pinard near the top of the crease to make it 1-0.
Early in the second, Jett Jones scored his first of a four-goal performance to make it 2-0. The Knight Monsters won a faceoff to the right of Trevor Gorsuch. Nate Kallen fired a shot to the net that was blocked in the low slot. Jones stayed with the play and beat Gorsuch near the left post.
He added his second of the night at 9:31 on the power play. Isaac Johnson put a shot on net that was stopped by Gorsuch. Jones fired home the rebound to make it 3-0.
Just 14 seconds later, Wichita finally solved Jesper Vikman to get on the board. Carroll put home a rebound off a shot from Will Zapernick to make it 3-1.
Jones recorded his hat trick marker at 14:41, putting home another rebound on the power play to make it 4-1.
He made it 5-1 at 16:36 for his fourth of the period. Luke Adam came into the zone, faded to the left circle and let a shot go on Gorsuch. He couldn't hold onto the rebound and Jones put it past him.
Patrick Newell closed the scoring with three seconds to go in the second with assists to Isaac Johnson and Adam on the man advantage.
Carroll recorded his first playoff goal of his career. Zapernick and T.J. Lloyd tallied their first playoff helpers on the goal scored by Carroll.
Wichita was 0-for -2 on the power play. Tahoe was 4-for-7 on the man advantage.
The two teams will face off in Game 2 on Easter Sunday starting at 6:05 p.m.
