WICHITA, Kan. (Mar. 5) – The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, AHL's San Jose Barracuda and powered by Toyota, closes a two-game homestand this afternoon at 4:05 p.m. against the Utah Grizzlies.
On Friday night, Utah earned a 5-4 overtime win against the Thunder. Today is the last trip of the year for Utah to INTRUST Bank Arena. The two teams will face each other at the Maverik Center at the end of the month.
This is the second meeting of the season between the Thunder and the Grizzlies. All-time, Wichita is 12-24-6 against Utah and 10-11-2 at home against the Grizzlies.
Both teams were off last night. Kansas City knocked off Idaho at home, which pushes the Mavericks into second place just one point ahead of Wichita. The Grizzlies are in fifth place with 51 points.
Jake Wahlin recorded his 10th goal of the season on Friday night. It was his first goal since Valentine’s Day. He has points in five of his last eight games.
Quinn Preston tallied his 19th goal of the season on Friday. The rookie out of Ohio State has 46 points (19g, 27a) in 47 games.
Jay Dickman tallied his 20th goal of the season on Friday night. He has five points in his last five games. Dickman needs eight points to eclipse his career-high from last season when he recorded 58 points (20g, 38a). Dickman has 20 goals in back-to-back seasons.
Justin Kapelmaster made a season-high 53 saves on Friday night. He saw 58 shots which is a new season-high for shots against in a game. Kapelmaster has seen 50 shots in two of his three starts so far this season since coming to Wichita.
THUNDERBOLTS...Cole MacDonald is tied for seventh among dmen with 34 points, third among defenseman in power play assists (19) and third among defenseman with 23 power play points...Mark Liwiski is first in penalty minutes for rookies (149)...Wichita is 18-3-1 when leading after two...Wichita is 11-6-5 in one-goal games...Wichita is 21-19-5 when being outshot by its opponent...
GRIZZLIES NOTES – Andrew Nielsen is second in penalty minutes (166) and third in minor penalties (38)...Cameron Wright is tied for 12th in rookie scoring with 41 points, first for rookies with 188 shots, tied for first for rookies with seven game-winning goals and third in minor penalties for rookies with 35...Zack Tsekos is sixth in rookie shooting percentage (21.7%)...Utah leads the league in average penalty minutes per game (18.55)...
