Thunder Signs Slick Forward Sofron

Wichita, KS (July 19th) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced today the signing of forward Istvan Sofron (IST-vahn SOH-fron).

"I'm so excited because this is the first time I will be playing in the US," said Sofron. "I've never played in a small rink before, but I'm looking forward to this season. I think my style is suitable for it. I like to finish checks. I'm a strong competitor, good skater, good shooting skills and I always try to do my best. Growing up as a child, I always knew that I would like to play in the US. For me, this is a dream come true."

Sofron, 29, has played exclusively overseas in the Austrian League and DEL. A native of Miercurea Ciuc, Romania, the 6-foot-2, 201-pound forward has racked up 213 points (107g, 106a) and 458 penalty minutes in 357 games in the EBEL (Austrian League) and 51 points (20g, 31a) in 122 games in the DEL. Last season, he played for the Szekeshfehervar Alba Volan HC collecting 30 points (15g, 15a) and 85 penalty minutes in 49 games.

The slick forward has represented Team Hungary nine consecutive seasons, including competing in the World Championships. Sofron won silver three times and bronze twice. He was also named the Best Forward in 2010-11, recording 17 points (10g, 7a) in 13 International games. In 2015-16, he was named as a World Championship Top 3 Player on Team Hungary. Most recently, he scored Hungary's lone marker against the United States last May in a 5-1 loss.

"Istvan has elite level skill and has a tremendous shot," commented Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. "He has played in the top European leagues and has played against excellent competition. We are looking forward to seeing him on the ice in Wichita."

Sofron becomes the seventh player announced this offseason and joins Matt DeBlouw, Dyson Stevenson, Jeremy Beaudry, Travis Ewanyk, Etienne Boutet and Justin Hamonic on the roster.

The 26th season of Thunder hockey kicks off on Friday, October 13th against the Indy Fuel.
