Thunder Receives Two from Bakersfield

Wichita, KS (Oct. 3rd) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced several transactions today leading up to Opening Night. Forward Kyle Platzer has been assigned by the Edmonton Oilers to Wichita from Bakersfield. Forward Zach O'Brien has been loaned to Wichita from Bakersfield. Forward Dana Tyrell has been signed to a tryout agreement. Forward Igor Nomokonov has been released from his tryout agreement.

Platzer, 22, has played the last two seasons in Bakersfield. A native of Waterloo, Ontario, the 5-foot-11, 183-pound forward was drafted by the Oilers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft (#96, 4th round). Overall, he has 28 points (9g, 19a) in 103 games with the Condors. Prior to turning pro, Platzer spent three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with London and Owen Sound. He had a breakout year in 2014-15, piling up 81 points (34g, 47a) in 68 games and added five points (1g, 4a) in five playoff games.

O'Brien, 25, returns to Wichita after signing with Bakersfield this offseason. The St. John's, Newfoundland native netted 27 points (9g, 18a) in 32 games last season in Thunder blue. O'Brien brings 175 games of American Hockey League experience to the Thunder, having played with the Manchester Monarchs, Chicago Wolves, St. John's IceCaps and Binghamton Senators. His best season came in 2014-15 with the Monarchs, recording 32 points (14g, 18a) and skated in 19 playoff games en route to a Calder Cup Championship.

Tyrell, 28, brings a wealth of experience to the Air Capital. A native of Airdrie, Alberta, the 5-foot-10, 192-pound forward was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft (#47, 2nd round). Tyrell broke into the pro ranks in 2009-10 with the Norfolk Admirals, recording 36 points (9g, 27a) in 74 games. He made his NHL debut in 2010-11, appearing in 78 games with the Lightning. Overall, Tyrell has 232 games of AHL experience and 135 games in the NHL.
