Thunder Adds OHL Champion Lemcke

Wichita, KS (July 11th) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced today the signing of rookie defenseman Justin Lemcke.

"Justin is a guy that leads by example and sets the tone for his team," commented Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. "It's rare that a player is a three-year captain at the junior level, but Justin was just that. He is held in high esteem by his peers as he was awarded the Mickey Renauld Captain's Trophy this past year. We're excited to add Justin this season."

Lemcke, 21, recently completed a five-year junior career in the Ontario Hockey League with the Belleville Bulls and the Hamilton Bulldogs. A native of Whitby, Ontario, the 6-foot-2, 201-pound defenseman collected 105 points (30g, 75a) in 258 OHL games. He led the Bulldogs to an OHL Championship this past season and an appearance in the Memorial Cup.

"I'm very excited to have signed with the Thunder," stated Lemcke. "I've always had a dream to play pro hockey and overcome the challenges that come with it. I look forward to growing my game and competing at the next level."

After the season, he was chosen as the 2017-18 recipient of the Mickey Renaud Captain's Trophy, which is awarded to the OHL captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, with passion and dedication to the game of hockey and community. Lemcke was the longest serving captain in the OHL, having worn the 'C' for three-straight seasons and was very involved in the Hamilton community.
