Rookie Gillies Inked By Thunder

Wichita, KS (August 24th) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced today the signing of rookie forward Alex Gillies for the 2018-19 season.

"Alex came highly recommended by people I trust and is an extremely intelligent and versatile player," commented Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. "He comes from a winning program and has been well coached. We're excited that he will become a member of our group."

Gillies, 23, turns pro after playing a four-year career at Michigan Tech (NCAA D1). He was part of back-to-back WCHA Championship winning teams. In 117 career games for the Huskies, he tallied 39 points (17g, 22a).

"I'm excited to be a part of the team and have the opportunity to play for this organization," commented Gillies. "I'm ready for the season to start and am hoping to contribute offensively as well as maintain a strong two-way game."

A native of Vernon, British Columbia, the 6-foot, 190-pound forward played his junior career for the British Columbia Hockey League's Salmon Arm Silverbacks. He had a career year in 2013-14, piling up 58 points (28g, 30a) in 46 games. Gillies was also a member of the Canadian World Junior A Challenge team that took the Bronze Medal.
