Michigan State Rookie DeBlouw Signs in Wichita

Wichita, KS (August 18th) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators and powered by Toyota, announced today the signing of rookie forward Matt DeBlouw (de-BLOWL) to the roster for the 2016-17 season.

“Matt came highly recommended by his coaches and people I know that have seen him play,” stated Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. “He possesses good size and speed and is very versatile. I look forward to coaching him this season.”

DeBlouw, 22, played four seasons at Michigan State University where he tallied 55 points (27g, 28a) in 128 games. During his rookie campaign, he finished with 21 points (10g, 11a) in 42 games as a true freshman. He tied for third on the team in goals, second in points and earned honorable mention to the CCHA All-Rookie Team. "I'm really excited to start the next chapter of my hockey career in Wichita,” said DeBlouw. “I have been blessed with this opportunity and I am eager to get the season started here soon.” A native of Chesterfield Township, Michigan, the 6-foot-1, 210-pounder was drafted by the Calgary Flames during the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (round 7, #186). He was ranked #37 out of 210 North American prospects after impressing at the NHL Scouting Combine. Prior to turning pro, DeBlouw played two season of junior hockey with the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks. He notched 33 points (11g, 22a) in 58 games during the 2011-12 season and earned an invitation to the inaugural USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January. "Coach Cameron started calling me a couple months ago. Getting to know him has made the transition to pro hockey easier. Talking about the style of play has made me very excited to get the season underway as well. Malcolm's track record of developing players seems to be exactly what I need to be effective at the pro level."
