Former CIS Player of the Year Signs in Wichita

Wichita, KS (Sept. 22nd) - The Wichita Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, AHL's Bakersfield Condors and powered by Toyota, announced today the signing of forward Guillaume Asselin. "I'm really excited to get things started here in Wichita," commented Asselin. "It's going to be my first complete pro year and I want the team to have a great playoff run. I'm an offensive guy that can score goals and I can be a good playmaker."

Asselin, 25, comes to Wichita after spending the last three and a half seasons at the University of Quebec-Trois-Rivieres (USport). A native of Quebec, the 5-foot-11, 194-pound forward was named the 2015-16 CIS Player of the Year after recording 27 goals and 47 points in just 28 games. He was also named to the CIS All-Canadian First Team that same season. In 2016-17, he helped his school claim the Universiade Bronze Medal. Overall, Asselin tallied 125 points (58g, 67a) in 80 games.

"Guillaume came highly recommended by coaches and scouts that I know that saw him in junior and university hockey," stated Head Coach Malcolm Cameron. "He's a solid goal scorer and point producer that we're excited to have in our lineup. Guillaume will attend training camp with the Belleville Senators."

After the end of the 2016-17 campaign, Asselin signed a contract with the St. John's IceCaps and was assigned to the Brampton Beast. He recorded two points (1g, 1a) in seven games during his time with the Beast.

Prior to his time in college, Asselin played four years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Montreal Juniors and Chicoutimi Sagueneens. He was a prolific scorer at the junior level, recording back-to-back 30-goal seasons (35g in 2010-11 and 33 goals in 2011-12), recorded 70 or more points three years in a row and was named to the QMJHL's Second All-Star Team in 2010-11. Overall, he piled up 306 points (132g, 174a) in 331 games.
